Automation is the function of updating or adding data to a Subscriber Record based on the Subscriber’s actions, or either adding or moving a Subscriber record to a second List based on those actions.
1. You can modify existing data in a field – maybe changing No to Yes
2. You can add data to a blank field
3. You can Copy a Subscriber record from one List to another List (the Subscriber is then in two Lists)
4. You can Move a Subscriber record from One List to another List (the Subscriber is still only in one List, but a different one).
The function is Automated as those functions are triggered by an action carried out by the Subscriber – could be Opening an email OR Clicking a Link in an email. The function is therefore fully automatic once set up and requires no further input from you.
These are the functions that facilitate the creation of sophisticated Sales Funnels where a subscriber automatically progresses through a series of Autoresponder Campaigns, the particular route through the series being dependent on that Subscriber’s actions.
When setting up Custom Fields to use in “Automation” you should ALWAYS create the field with a default value – never create it as a blank field. Databases do not really recognise “Blank” as a value so as an instance – if you create a Custom Field to record whether, or not, a subscriber Clicked a Link in a Campaign, and you then wanted to send an email to those who did not Click it – you will ONLY be able to carry out that Search if you have set the default value of that field to “No” as searching on “Is not Yes” will NOT find the blank ones. But if the default value was set to “No” then searching on “Is No” will find those who did not click the Link.

The same functions can be triggered by a subscriber clicking a Link in a Campaign – and you can find out just which Link if there are more than one.
